This photo was taken in March 2005. Walking close to St James’ church I happened to glance up and see the Nativity scene strung across the street and wondered at first why nobody had bothered to take it down three months after Christmas. But then my eye caught the street lamp and it reminded me of the Star of Bethlehem fixed at the place of the Nativity, the star that led the Three Kings to the stable where Jesus was born. And then I began to realise that Medjugorje is a new Bethlehem where millions of pilgrims have made their way to the place where Mary presents Jesus, her Son. It’s a very simple picture, uncluttered against a beautiful skyblue backdrop. As far as I can remember the Christmas decoration is still there all year round.
