Jesus rules OK

In today’s Gospel reading (Mark 2 : 23-28), the Pharisees, always ready to challenge Jesus, fire yet another question at him and ask why his disciples pick corn on the sabbath, something that is forbidden by law. In one of two answers given, Jesus says: The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath, so the son of man is master even of the sabbath.

In other words the law is made for man’s benefit and man is not made for the benefit of the law, which happens so very often in today’s society. Rules and the Law were very much imposed at the time of Jesus as well.

Our Lady has never mentioned the word ‘law’ in any of her messages from Medjugorje (why should she, there is no need to) – but on occasions she does use the word ‘rule’ but in a context very different from its more common meaning as applied on earth.

Our Lady recognises the need in our lives to be governed, but her meaning derives from the heart of the King of Kings, a ruler above all others. She says:

• Let God rule in the hearts of all men…
• In this way joy will rule in your hearts and you will be carriers of peace and love…
• When you will have love in the heart, peace will rule in you…
• Ask Jesus to be born in each of your hearts and to begin to rule in your lives…

Jesus does not ‘force’ his rule or law on any of us. We each have a free will. Instead he INVITES us to surrender. Come to me all you who labour and are overburdened (by the many rules of the law) and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light. Matthew 11 : 28-30

Our Lady is also very fond of using the word ‘surrender’.

Dear children! I call you to decide completely for God. I beseech you, dear children, to surrender yourselves completely and you shall be able to live everything I am telling you. It shall not be difficult for you to surrender yourselves completely to God. Thank you for having responded to my call. January 2, 1986

So the easy yoke and light burden, his governance, is there for our benefit. Jesus rules by peace, love and joy. His mother knows this and that is why she says to her children: Surrender… Let Jesus rule in the hearts of men…

And in this way there will be less ‘need’ for the many rules and laws imposed here on earth because of the lack of peace in our hearts.
